Conversations About Ethics

An Intercultural Perspective on Aspirational Ethics to Promote Inclusive Care

R. Esteban Montilla, Ph.D., LPC

In this workshop, Dr. Montilla introduces the concept of aspirational ethics from an intercultural perspective. Issues related to ethics, law and religious codes were discussed to highlight the differences among them and implications for clinical practice. Participants examined a series of cases that illustrate current and controversial issues in bioethics that create barriers for both healthcare professionals and those receiving care. A set of tools were provided for clinicians to use in considering how to address these conflicts within in a diverse and pluralistic society in their effort to break down barriers for individuals seeking healthcare.
